2022 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME vs. TESLA MODEL Y

IN SILVER SPRING, MD

Overview

When you're comparing small SUVs, two options that might come up include the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Tesla Model Y. Although they share some similarities, they have dramatically different starting price points and come equipped with unique features. Check out how the two compare as you decide which is the right new car for you in Silver Spring, MD.

Power Beneath the Hood

Although both the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime and 2022 Tesla Model Y rely on electric power, the RAV4 Prime is a bit more flexible because of its plug-in hybrid powertrain. It can drive up to 42 miles on a full charge, and when the power runs out, it converts to traditional hybrid operation. The Tesla Model Y is a fully electric small crossover that can drive up to 330 miles on a full charge. But when the battery runs dry, you do have to stop and charge it as it doesn't have a hybrid mode.

Safety Features

Both models come well-equipped with active driver aids. The Model Y's bundle includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision mitigation, and lane-keeping assist. Toyota Safety Sense includes similar features to keep the driver and passengers safe. The RAV4 Prime is also available with options like a surround-view parking camera system, a head-up display, and a digital rearview mirror that provides a view of the rear when your cargo area is full.

Premium Tech and Comfort Features

The RAV4 Prime is available in two trim levels, and each has its own list of equipment. With the base model, premium comfort features include heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and cloth upholstery. Stepping up to the XSE adds simulated leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. On the tech side, the base trim includes an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and multiple USB ports. You can also get a larger touch screen, wireless device charging, navigation, and a premium JBL audio system. The Model Y shares some of the comfort and tech features offered on the RAV4 Prime. However, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay aren't available on any trim level, and the streaming navigation and entertainment services require a monthly subscription. Combined with the higher price tag, owning a Model Y and using its features can get pricey. With so many appealing features and an affordable price tag, the Toyota RAV4 Prime is the winner in this head-to-head competition.
