2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. Jeep Wrangler

Overview

Off-road enthusiasts have a handful of vehicles to consider that can keep up with their lifestyles. But two that stand out from the pack are the Toyota 4Runner and the Jeep Wrangler. Take a closer look at the two SUVs and what each includes.

Off-Road Capabilities

Both the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and 2023 Jeep Wrangler are off-roading icons and have been for years. Each model has been part of its respective lineup since the mid-1980s. If you want to get off the beaten path, either vehicle will be able to keep up, as they're each known for their off-roading prowess. The base Wrangler includes skid plates, 17-inch wheels, tow hooks, and fog lights, while the 4Runner boasts underbody skid plates and LED headlights. The 4Runner comes in a few trims that include extra off-roading features. They're known as the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, and they have additional drive modes for rough terrain, a locking rear differential, and an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that boosts wheel articulation on rough terrain. Jeep's off-roading warrior is the Rubicon, featuring heavy-duty front and rear axles, electronic locking front and rear differentials, and rock-protection rails.

Engine and Performance

Jeep offers a dizzying array of engine options for the Wrangler, ranging from a 3.6-liter V-6 to a 6.4-liter V-8. This model is also newly available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Toyota keeps it a bit simpler with a standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It works with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the lower trims, while the TRD Off-Road options include Toyota's four-wheel-drive system.

Interior & Safety

The Wrangler comes in two- and four-door iterations, with multiple trim levels available. However, no matter which trim you choose, the maximum seating capacity of your Wrangler is five. The Toyota 4Runner offers more space for two more of your crew, as a third row is available on certain trim levels.
The 4Runner beats out the Wrangler in several safety aspects, with higher crash ratings and a more extensive safety suite. Toyota bundles active driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision mitigation, and lane-departure warning. To get most of these features on the Wrangler, you'll have to jump up to the top trim level. Whether you're ready to tackle rough terrain or need a vehicle to transport your family, the Toyota 4Runner is an appealing choice that can always keep up.
