An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission is standard for the XLE and Limited trims, while the MAX Limited and MAX Platinum trims have a Direct Shift six-speed automatic transmission. Full-time electronic AWD are standard for the MAX models and the Limited trim has an Electronic On-Demand AWD system. The XLE trim has a standard front-wheel drive drivetrain.
Drive Modes
One of the most special things about the Grand Highlander Hybrid is the performance and versatility of the SUV, which can be largely attributed to the selectable drive modes found on each model. The XLE has Sport, Eco, Normal, and EV drive modes, while the Limited has Sport, Eco, EV, Normal, and Trail Modes. The MAX models have Sport, Eco, Normal, and Snow drive modes.
Fuel Economy
The Hybrid XLE gets an estimated 37 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 36 MPG combined. Both of the MAX trims get an estimated 26 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined.
Technology
Both MAX models and the Limited trim have an 11-speaker JBL audio system with a subwoofer and amplifier, while the XLE trim has a six-speaker system. All trims have a huge 12.3-inch Toyota multimedia touchscreen, which has compatibility with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
