Your Maryland driver’s license is valid for eight years, and then you need to renew. The renew license procedure for your license depends on the status of your license, namely valid, expired, suspended, or lost or stolen. If you need to make the renewal in Silver Spring, MD, this is the procedure you’ll follow.

License Status

Your license can be in one of four different states. The renewal options you have depend on the status of your license:

Renew License online in Silver Spring, MD

Valid

If your license is valid, you’ll receive a renewal notice. You can renew your license up to one year before it expires and one year after it expires. You can renew your license for a period of 5 to 8 years, and the charge is $6 per year of renewal.

Expired

If your license has expired for more than one year, you need to follow the procedure of a new license applicant. This means you must complete a written driver’s knowledge test, a written driver’s skills test, and a vision test. Once these are complete, you’ll submit the proof of competition with your renewal application.

Suspended

If your license has been suspended, you’ll need to wait out the terms of the suspension. If the suspension is due to a criminal conviction, the court’s requirements will also have to be satisfied. If there’s a citation, the terms of the citation will have to be fulfilled. You may also have fees that need to be paid. You can renew once the suspension requirements have been fulfilled.

Lost or Stolen License

You can apply for a new license from the Maryland Motor Vehicles Administration (MMVA). You’ll need to use the self-service kiosks at any MMVA office, and you’ll need your date of birth, your social security number, your driver’s license number, and payment of the replacement fee.

Renewal Options

Your renewal options depend on if your license is REAL ID compliant or not. If you renewed your license in 2011 or later, you can renew your license online, at an MMVA self-service kiosk, by mail, or in person. If your license is not REAL ID compliant, you’ll have to apply in person at an MMVA office.

Online and Self-Service Kiosk

To renew using either of these methods, you need your date of birth, your Maryland driver’s license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a debit or credit card. The MMVA will send your new license in 4-7 business days.

By Mail

You’ll need to complete the renewal application. If you’re over 40 years of age, you also need to submit a vision test every eight years. You’ll also need to send a check as payment.

In-Person

You’ll need to bring your previous license and proof of your Social Security number. You’ll need to have new pictures taken and provide a new signature.
