Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) is an advanced suite of safety and driving assistance technologies designed to help prevent accidents before they happen. TSS includes a set of integrated features that use cameras, radar, sensors, and computers to monitor the road and surrounding environment while driving.
Toyota Safety Sense™ Systems
Pre-Collision System
The Pre-Collision System uses a camera and invisible laser sensor to calculate the distance between your Toyota and the vehicle, pedestrians, and obstacles ahead. It provides audible and visual alerts if a potential frontal collision is detected. The system can even automatically apply brakes if needed to help prevent a collision if the driver fails to respond to the alert.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is Toyota’s adaptive cruise control system that helps maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle detected ahead. It automatically adjusts your speed without needing your input. Some models come with Full-Speed Range DRCC, which offers more functionality.
Lane Departure Alert
The Lane Departure Alert system monitors vehicle position within visibly marked traffic lanes. If an unintentional lane departure is detected without the turn signal activated, the system will trigger an audible and visual alert.
Lane Tracing Assist
This system builds upon Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Departure Alert. When both systems are activated and lane markers are detectable, Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the Toyota centered within its lane by making small steering adjustments.
Road Sign Assist
This technology uses a camera mounted in the vehicle to detect certain road signs while driving. These include posted speed limits, do not enter signs, stop signs, yield signs, and select warning signs. When it detects signs, it displays an icon representing the sign on the Toyota’s instrument panel or dashboard screen.
Automatic High Beams
The Automatic High Beams system controls high beams for the driver at night. It uses an in-vehicle camera to detect the taillights and headlights of oncoming and preceding traffic.
Safety Sense Packages
TSS-P
This basic package equips Toyota models with the four key safety technologies. These are the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
TSS 2.0
As an advanced package, TSS 2.0 enhances safety and convenience. It has all the systems in TSS-P and adds Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist.
TSS 2.5/2.5+
These two packages are an upgrade to Safety Sense 2.0. They use high-resolution cameras and enhanced radar to boost the performance of collision avoidance, lane-keeping, and adaptive cruise control systems.
TSS 3.0
As the latest generation of Toyota’s safety offering, TSS 3.0 advances capabilities with upgraded hardware and new features.
