Catallytic Converter in Silver Spring, MD

Signs You Need a New Catalytic Converter in Silver Spring, MD

The catalytic converter in your Toyota is designed to convert toxic engine gases into harmless ones. This process reduces engine pollution and allows your engine to run more efficiently. Converters last, on average, for approximately ten years. Eventually, your converter will become blocked or damaged. If this happens, your Toyota dealer can fix the problem for you. These are a few signs that your converter could be in trouble. Your Engine Dies Quickly If you start your engine and it dies in a few seconds, the most likely cause is a blocked converter. As your converter works, carbon and other byproducts can build up in the converter and create a blockage. If the exit to the exhaust is blocked, engine gases won't be able to escape your car. These gases will flow back into your engine. The newly-arriving gases increase the pressure in your engine. At the same time, the combustion process starts when your engine turns over. This combination of gases and high concentration of fuel vapor will cause your engine to shut down very quickly. Our technicians will clear the blockage from the converter and your engine should start normally again. Weird Noises From the Converter Rattling and other noises from the converter are usually a sign that its internal structure has been damaged. A converter has a honeycomb structure that provides the surface area necessary for converting gases. This structure is very strong, as it must endure temperatures over 1,600 F as part of the conversion process.   The honeycomb can be damaged by other problems, for example, engine misfiring. When a cylinder doesn't ignite, its hot contents are dumped into the converter. This hot fuel can create cracks in the honeycomb, and these cracks can lead to sections breaking off. The broken sections will cause additional damage inside the converter. Our technicians will need to replace the converter, as it can't be repaired. Black Exhaust Smoke Regular exhaust smoke is white and whispy, and it's a sign your converter is doing its job. If you see thick black smoke from the exhaust, your converter has probably failed. This smoke has a strong sulfur stench, and it contains high levels of toxic chemicals. Your converter could have failed due to age or damage. Our technicians will need to investigate.   If your car is producing black smoke, it won't pass an emissions test, and you could receive a citation for the toxic chemicals it's releasing. Once we fix the problem, your exhaust smoke should return to normal.   If you see these or any other problems, don't hesitate to make a service appointment at DARCARS Toyota of Silver Spring right away. Our trusted technicians are trained professionals with crucial knowledge making them the best ones for the job. We hope this blog has helped inform you better about your vehicle's engine. How Do You Transfer Vehicle Ownership in Silver Spring, MD?

Transferring ownership is slightly different depending on whether you're selling, gifting, or donating a car. Regardless of the type of transfer, there are several documents you have to complete to transfer vehicle ownership. We'd like to tell you more about how you transfer a vehicle in Silver Spring, MD. Selling a Car The documents you need to sell a car are determined by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MMVA). If you're selling a car, you'll need your certificate of title and a bill of sale. In addition, if your car was subject to a lien, you'll need to complete a lien release form. You'll also need an odometer statement. The certificate of title is the most important document for your car as it proves car ownership. To complete the transfer, you'll fill in and sign the certificate as the seller, and the other party will complete and sign the form as the buyer. Once this form is complete, it needs to be sent to the MMVA together with the other documentation. The MMVA will update its systems and issue an updated certificate of title to the new owner. Gifting a Car Gifting a car involves transferring ownership of your car to a family member or friend. The procedure is very similar. You'll need the same forms used for selling a car. The difference is you need to fill in "Gift" under the purchase price. The MMVA has strict requirements for defining who is a family member.   A close family member can receive your car as a gift and not be liable for the 6% excise tax. It's advisable to go to the local MMVA office with your family member and the completed documentation. This should allow for a smoother and quicker transfer of ownership. Donating a Car Donating a car is almost identical to gifting a car, except you're transferring ownership to a charity. When you choose a charity, it's important to check that they can receive a car as a donation. If they can, the next step is to check that the charity is registered with the IRS as a 501 (3) (c) institution. Your chosen charity will send a representative to complete the paperwork with you.   You'll complete the form as the seller, and the charity representative will complete the form as the buyer. In the purchase price section, you'll write "Donation". If your chosen charity is registered, you should be able to claim the value of your car as a donation with the IRS.   If you'd like to know more about these processes or to choose a replacement from our wide selection of cars, begin browsing our inventory now or click here for more helpful automotive tips & tricks today!   Image By Pixabay

One way street sign in Silver Spring, MD

6 Tips for Navigating One-Way Streets on Silver Spring, MD Roads

One-way streets can be tricky to navigate, especially for new drivers. Here's some advice for how to safely navigate this type of road in the Silver Spring, MD area. Check Your Navigation System Modern technology makes many aspects of traveling the roads easy, and that includes handling one-way roads. You can check the route you have planned on the GPS system or app that you use. In most cases, the information displayed should be up-to-date to inform you of any one-way roads on your route. There should be markings that clearly denote when a road can only be traveled down in one direction. Look for signs indicating where you can or cannot turn when you pull up to an intersection. You should also keep an eye out for 'wrong way' or 'do not enter' signs, as these are often used to mark roads that can't be traveled down in the direction that the sign is showing. Pay Attention to Parked Cars If there's parking on the street in the area you're driving in, that can be another clue to help you navigate one-way thoroughfares. Generally speaking, vehicles are required to park facing the direction that the road can be traveled down. If you see that all the vehicles are parked facing you, there's a good chance you're moving in the wrong direction. Keep Your Speed Under Control Whenever you're behind the wheel, you want to keep your speed manageable and within the restrictions that speed limits in the area put on you. In case you do end up moving down a road in the wrong direction, keeping your speed under control will help you react as necessary to stay safe through this potentially dangerous incident. Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions While this advice applies to any situation on the road, it's even more important to stay fully alert and aware when dealing with one-way roads. Don't let common distractions such as loud music or your cell phone take your focus off the road. This could cause you to miss signs indicating a one-way road. Know How to Safely Make a U-Turn In the event that you end up going the wrong way down a one-way road, you need to know how to recover. Look for the nearest place where you have some room to maneuver and pull over to the side of the road. Then, back off towards the shoulder to reposition your vehicle and take a wide turn to start moving in the correct direction.   So whether you're a new driver looking for more tips to help you on the roads or a new resident of Maryland seeking more information about your new state, these tips from us at DARCARS Toyota of Silver Spring are sure to help! Driving in Maryland: 6 Keys to Hassle-Free Parallel Parking

There are plenty of challenges drivers in Silver Spring, MD face on the road, but there are few that cause quite as much stress and anxiety as parallel parking does. The good news is that this maneuver doesn't need to be a hassle; follow these tips to take the stress out of your parking experience. Find the Right Spot Parking becomes a lot easier when you choose the right parking space. You'll want ample room to fit your vehicle, with a little extra wiggle room if possible, especially while you're still getting used to this maneuver. You should also make sure there are no restrictions on parking in the space you choose. Use Your Turn Signals One often-overlooked step in parking on the side of the road is showing other drivers your intent by using your turn signals. Signal towards the side of the road you're parking on before you begin parking. This will let other drivers know what you're doing so that they can react accordingly. Check Your Surroundings Just like any other driving maneuver, situational awareness is critical when you're parking. Make sure your rear-view and side mirrors are properly positioned to give you a good view of the area behind your vehicle. You'll need them to watch for oncoming traffic as well as judge the distance between your vehicle and the vehicles you're parking near. Start from the Correct Position Beginning from the right position will set you up for successful parking. Adjust your vehicle so that your steering wheel is lined up with the car in front’s steering wheel. This will allow you a clear view of the space behind you and give you a good starting position to guide your vehicle into the space from. Cut in Towards the Curb Once you've positioned yourself correctly, start reversing into the spot. When the middle of your vehicle lines up with the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of your parking space, cut the wheel sharply towards the curb. Straighten the wheel out once you're in towards the curb to align your vehicle properly. Straighten Up and Adjust Now that you're in the parking space, you'll want to put the finishing touches on your work. Start by straightening your wheels so that you can be as level with the side of the road as possible. You should also adjust your position relative to the cars in front and behind you, leaving some space if possible, to make it easy for everyone to get out of their space.   We hope these tips help you the next time you're parallel parking! We suggest checking out the 2022 Toyota Highlander if you're interested in buying a car with the latest technology to provide the best driving experience possible.

4 Tips for Budgeting for a New Car in Silver Spring, MD

Are you in the market for a new car in Silver Spring, MD? While it can be an exciting endeavor, it's easy to get carried away or confused. Here are 4 tips to help you keep a clear head and make smart decisions when budgeting for a new car. Determine What You Can Afford Buying a new car is a big financial decision, and it's essential to budget carefully to ensure that you can afford the payments. The first step is to determine how much you can afford to spend on a vehicle. This includes the purchase price, insurance, gas, and maintenance. Once you have an idea of your budget, you can start shopping for cars in your price range. It's also important to keep in mind that different cars have different expenses. For example, a luxury car may have higher insurance rates than a more modest vehicle. As you shop for cars, be sure to consider all of the associated costs to make sure that you're staying within your budget. Click here for more car buying tips & tricks! Consider Financing If you're in the market for a new car, it's important to consider all of your options when it comes to financing. One option is to take out a loan from a bank or credit union. This can be a good option if you have good credit and can get a competitive interest rate. Another option is to finance the car through the dealership.   This can be a good option if you don't have great credit or if you want to take advantage of special financing deals that the dealership may offer. Whichever option you choose, make sure to shop around for the best rates and terms before making a final decision. Consider Your Needs vs. Wants Start by making a list of the features that are absolutely essential, such as four-wheel drive or a specific type of engine. Then, make a separate list of the features that would be nice to have but are not essential. This will help you to narrow down your choices and avoid overspending.   Once you have an idea of the type of car you need, research different models to find one that fits your budget. If you're buying a new car, then it might even be possible to customize specific elements of the trim level to suit your needs. Find a Reputable Dealer and Ask for Help When buying a new car, it's important to work with a reputable dealer that you can trust. They can help you to find the right car for your needs and budget. 5 Tips for Acing Your Maryland Driver's License Test in Maryland

If you are learning to drive in Silver Spring, MD, you may be a little nervous about passing the driver's license test. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources to help you learn, and with safety and convenience features in the all-new 2022 Toyota Camry, you will feel even more confident behind the wheel. Here are 5 tips to help you ace your test. Get Comfortable Behind the Wheel Before Going In This is the most obvious tip, but it is something that many test-takers often skip. Before you go in to take your exam, you should absolutely be comfortable behind the wheel. If you rush into things before you are comfortable and well-prepared, then you are going to have more anxiety and make more mistakes. Getting comfortable behind the wheel comes with plenty of practice. However, if this is something you struggle with, try to work on your confidence. Observe an Experienced Driver Even when you are not driving, you should be watching how an experienced driver behaves on the road. When you are in the vehicle with someone who has been driving for a while, try not to be on your phone. Instead, pay close attention and use this opportunity to ask questions. Observe how they handle stressful or hazardous conditions on the road. You would be surprised by how much you can learn simply by observing.   If you haven't taken the permit test yet, then this is the only driving experience you can get until you pass, but it is an excellent way to get yourself prepared and ready to begin practicing behind the wheel. It is also a great way to observe the things you will be studying about in your manual. Take Every Opportunity for Practice Once you have your permit, you should be using every opportunity that you get to practice. Whenever you can get behind the wheel, you should absolutely do it. Make sure that you always follow the rules, and have an experienced driver with you. Good habits learned and practiced from the start will put you in the best position to pass the exam. The more you drive, the more comfortable and confident you will be when it comes time to take the test. Manage Anxiety on the Day of the Test If you have done everything you can to prepare and you still feel anxious on the day of the test, know that it is alright. Many people feel this way before any kind of big exam. However, ensure that you have familiarized yourself with coping strategies, like controlled breathing, so that you don't let it overwhelm you when it is your time to shine. The last thing you want is for that to stand in your way on your big day.   We wish you the best of luck! If you are looking for a new vehicle to get you started, then we would love to help you with that too. 6 Smart Tips for New Drivers in Maryland

It is one of the most exciting feelings in life when you have your new driver's license. After years of being only a passenger, you're now a driver. It's a reason to feel proud of yourself. It's also a moment to realize the responsibility of now being a driver. We'd like to give all new drivers tips on enjoying their time behind the wheel and keeping themselves safe. Obey the Rules All the rules you studied when you were preparing for your driver’s test are going to be even more important. Once you're a driver, you're legally responsible for your conduct on the road at all times. Remembering and applying the information you learned will become second nature very quickly through practice. By following the rules at all times, you can keep yourself safe and relaxed. Obeying the rules will also protect you against traffic tickets. Maintain Your Car Looking after your car is one of the most important driving tips. Keep your car well maintained and in good working order. This will not only give you a sense of pride, but it will help keep you safe too. Neglecting maintenance can quickly lead to problems. For example, brakes that aren’t maintained can fail. Always remember to check your tires, gas, and other fluid levels. You can drive with confidence when you know your car is working perfectly. Wear Your Seatbelt Always wear your seatbelt. When you get behind the wheel, make it a priority to buckle up before you start the engine. If you do this, it'll become second nature. A seatbelt can keep you safe, by preventing you from being thrown from your seat if you're involved in an accident. It's also a primary offense in 34 US states to drive without a seat belt and a secondary offense in 15 other states. Make Yourself Comfortable Before you start the engine, make sure you're comfortable. Adjust your seat, check and adjust your mirrors, and make other adjustments. When your car is moving, you don't want to be distracted by having to shift a mirror. While adjusting your mirrors, ensure you have no blind spots behind you. If you have clear vision in all directions, your driving will be easier and safer. Don't Get Distracted When you're driving, you need to be able to concentrate fully on what you're doing. If you're changing the radio station, adjusting mirrors, or looking at a text on your cellphone, you could be in danger. Sometimes an accident can happen in a split second. If you're paying attention, you'll be able to safely avoid it. Don't Speed Regardless of the temptation to get somewhere faster, never, ever speed. The faster you're traveling, the longer it takes to stop. That extra second's delay in slowing down can result in an accident.   Congratulations on becoming a new driver! DARCARS Toyota of Silver Spring takes pride in having everything regarding your automotive needs. So if you wish to take a look at our new car deals to shop for your first vehicle or if you'd like to learn more tips and tricks from us, we have you covered.

4 Requirements for Getting Your Driver's Permit in Silver Spring, MD

Your Maryland driver's permit is the second stage in your quest for a driver's license. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MMVA) is responsible for all driving and licensing matters. This process can seem confusing at first, so we'd like to explain your requirements for getting a driver's permit if you live in Silver Spring, MD. Apply for a Learner’s Permit This is the first important step on the road to your driver's license. To complete this step, you'll need to book the written learner’s test at any MMVA office. To book the test, you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old. You will need to bring proof of your identity, proof of your address, and proof that you're a resident of Maryland. You will need to bring a parent or guardian with you if you're not yet an adult and pay $50 for the test. There are two sections to this, the written test and the vision test. Once you pass these tests, you'll be issued a learner's permit. What to Expect Written Test The written test is taken online and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. To pass this test, you need to score 88%, which is 22 correct answers out of 25 questions. To study for this test, you only have to read and understand one book. This book is the Maryland Driver’s Manual, and you can get a free copy from any MMVA office or download it from their website. Vision Test A licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist will perform this test, and to pass, you will need to demonstrate 20/40 vision in both eyes and a peripheral vision of 140 degrees. For this test, you will need to bring your eyeglasses or contact lenses with you. Driver’s Education You will need to complete an approved driver's education course. The MMVA office can provide you with a list of approved courses, or you can obtain it from their website. This course requires that you complete at least 30 hours of classroom work and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. Once you complete this section, the school will upload confirmation that you've completed the course to the MMVA. Supervised Driving Practice The third step is to complete 60 hours of driving practice. At least 10 hours of this must be undertaken at night, and preferably in bad weather. You will need to have a licensed driver of 21 years of age or older with you at all times. This licensed driver will need to confirm your practice with the MMVA. Provisional Permit Once you've completed the above steps, you can apply for your permit. You'll need to take proof of completion of the above steps when you attend your driving test. Once you pass this step, you'll be awarded your permit.   Once you complete all these steps, you'll be the proud possessor of your provisional permit! Renew License online in Silver Spring, MD

Renew License Procedure for Your Driver's License in Silver Spring, MD

Your Maryland driver's license is valid for eight years, and then you need to renew. The renew license procedure for your license depends on the status of your license, namely valid, expired, suspended, or lost or stolen. If you need to make the renewal in Silver Spring, MD, this is the procedure you'll follow. License Status Your license can be in one of four different states. The renewal options you have depend on the status of your license: Valid If your license is valid, you'll receive a renewal notice. You can renew your license up to one year before it expires and one year after it expires. You can renew your license for a period of 5 to 8 years, and the charge is $6 per year of renewal. Expired If your license has expired for more than one year, you need to follow the procedure of a new license applicant. This means you must complete a written driver's knowledge test, a written driver's skills test, and a vision test. Once these are complete, you'll submit the proof of competition with your renewal application. Suspended If your license has been suspended, you'll need to wait out the terms of the suspension. If the suspension is due to a criminal conviction, the court's requirements will also have to be satisfied. If there's a citation, the terms of the citation will have to be fulfilled. You may also have fees that need to be paid. You can renew once the suspension requirements have been fulfilled. Lost or Stolen License You can apply for a new license from the Maryland Motor Vehicles Administration (MMVA). You'll need to use the self-service kiosks at any MMVA office, and you'll need your date of birth, your social security number, your driver's license number, and payment of the replacement fee. Renewal Options Your renewal options depend on if your license is REAL ID compliant or not. If you renewed your license in 2011 or later, you can renew your license online, at an MMVA self-service kiosk, by mail, or in person. If your license is not REAL ID compliant, you'll have to apply in person at an MMVA office. Online and Self-Service Kiosk To renew using either of these methods, you need your date of birth, your Maryland driver's license number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a debit or credit card. The MMVA will send your new license in 4-7 business days. By Mail You'll need to complete the renewal application. If you're over 40 years of age, you also need to submit a vision test every eight years. You'll also need to send a check as payment. 4 Bad Driving Habits Silver Spring, MD Drivers Should Avoid

Bad driving habits are something that some drivers slip into even when they have a lot of experience behind the wheel. These habits can lead to an accident, damage to your car, or both. Most drivers with bad habits don't consciously think of them or realize they have them. It's important to recognize some of the most common bad habits, so you can avoid them when you're driving in Silver Spring, MD. Bad Brake Habits Two of the most common bad habits are unnecessary braking and riding the brakes. These habits are usually seen in younger, inexperienced drivers. Nervous or inexperienced drivers feel that the slower their car is moving, the greater the chance they have to react if something goes wrong. Braking excessively can cause an accident or, at the least, damage to your car. Frequent unnecessary braking can heat the brake fluid in your car, and it can start to boil. Hot brake fluid loses its hydraulic pressure and makes it difficult to apply the brakes when you need to. Riding the brakes can also damage your braking system, as it keeps the brake pads pressed against wheel rotors. This causes unnecessary friction and can wear out both the pads and the rotors. Distracted Driving When you're driving, it's vital to focus on the road ahead and the other drivers and pedestrians around you. It's easy for some drivers to become distracted, especially if they're driving in an area they're familiar with. This familiarity gives confidence, and drivers may focus on sights around them, like construction, new store opening signs, and anything other than the road ahead.   Other distractions include listening to loud music and looking at passengers in the car when talking to them. It's vital when driving to know what's going on around you at all times. Tailgating Tailgating is a very dangerous practice and is caused by aggressive drivers who are in a hurry. These drivers believe that if they stay as close to the car in front of them as possible that the car ahead will speed up or move out of the way. A driver who's tailgating is driving too close to the car in front and this can cause an accident if the car in front has to stop. You can be fined for tailgating. Fast Starts A fast start may look very cool in the movies, but it can cause damage to your car and potentially cause an accident. The excessive energy applied for a fast start can cause your torque converter to heat up faster than it should, and it places excessive strain on your drivetrain. A fast start can also reduce our control over your car and potentially cause an accident.   Making safe decisions behind the wheel can be paired with a car that helps you make intelligent and safe decisions. Tips for Taking Care of Your Car Through Maryland Summers

Summer weather can be a blessing and a curse. We all love enjoying the warm summer sun, but it can also be pretty destructive too. At DARCARS Toyota of Silver Spring, we want our customers to know how they can protect their vehicles all summer long. Visit a Certified Repair Shop for Maintenance There are many things that you can do yourself to protect your vehicle in the summer. However, when it comes to maintenance, you will want to leave that up to the professionals. You will want to ensure that your car is maintained correctly in the summer, and this will help protect it and keep it reliable throughout the season. If you want to keep your vehicle in excellent condition all summer long, make sure to see your local dealership for service. Many things can go wrong with your car in the summer, and a failure to properly maintain your vehicle will only exacerbate the situation. Fortunately, we know just what services your vehicle needs to prepare for each season. If you haven't already done it, then schedule a service appointment today. Protect the Paint and Finish The sun can wear out and fade your paint and finish, but you can easily protect it with a bit of care. Regularly wash and wax your vehicle to protect it from the sun. Washing will remove all of the corrosive elements that may have gotten onto your car, and waxing will give it a protective finish. Block Out the Sun Preventing the sun from reaching your vehicle altogether is a great way to minimize the damage. Whenever possible, you should park in the shade. Keep in mind that the hot sun can also wear out your vehicle's interior. You can counteract this by using a sunshade. This has the added benefit of keeping your car much cooler and reducing the strain on your AC too. Check Those Tires, Too The hot summer sun tends to heat the road to sweltering temperatures in the summertime. This extreme heat can also wear on your tires. The best way to protect them is to ensure that they are not over or under-inflated. Over or under-inflated tires are more prone to damage, which is never a good thing. The last thing you want is to be stranded out in the heat. Check your tire pressure regularly to ensure that your tires are protected. Summer Weather Also Brings Angry Storms Summer can also occasionally bring in some pretty nasty storms too. Ensure that you monitor weather conditions in your area, and take steps to protect your vehicle in the event of a storm. Do not drive through water, even if you think it's not that deep. This can be dangerous, and it could also damage your car too. If you are on the road when severe weather hits, find a safe place to stop until the threat passes.   Please get in touch with our repair shop in Silver Spring, MD, if you have any questions about the tips above. We're here to take out any guesswork you have about taking care of your car. So no matter the weather, be sure to trust our team to keep your Toyota running at its best!
